Project Manager for Never Walk Alone (Volunteer role)

We're currently looking for a Volunteer Project Manager for our Never Walk Alone Project

About Fences & Frontiers

Fences & Frontiers is dedicated to making the UK a more welcoming and inspiring place for refugees and asylum seekers. We focus on exploring the countryside and cultural spaces through walks, museum trips, and other enriching events.

About the project

Never Walk Alone is a walking project for refugees and asylum seekers that Fences & Frontiers has been running for six years. This project gives people access to  beautiful parts of the countryside and urban green spaces, opportunities to make friends and gain a sense of community, and helps improve mental and physical wellbeing.

About the role

The holder of this role will lead our flagship Never Walk Alone project.

This is a really exciting opportunity for anyone who loves nature and walking, and who wants to make a tangible difference to the lives of asylum seekers and refugees in London.

The project manager will work with our volunteer team to ensure our walks are suitable, safe, smooth running, and fun for all involved.  They will also ensure the central team receives participant data, receipts, comms materials.

Key responsibilities

The project manager’s primary role is to oversee the volunteers in the Never Walk Alone project and to delegate key tasks among the volunteer team:

  • Schedule and plan walks over the course of the year

  • Manage a small team of volunteers

  • Coordinate food and drink collections

  • Produce risk assessments

  • Set up Eventbrite links and whatsapp groups.

  • Take responsibility for a prepaid project debit card and collection of receipts.

  • Help to foster a culture of care and respect

Experience of working with refugees, common languages spoken by the refugee community, and first aid would be useful but not essential for this role.

Commitment and requirements

The Never Walk Alone project lead is an important position within Fences & Frontiers.

The role comes with a time commitment of approximately 3 hours per week plus attendance of one Saturday walk per month.

The project lead is not expected to attend all walks, but they should ensure all walk leads are fully prepared.

We are looking for a person who shares our values and wants to be part of our team long-term as we grow the project and organisation. We’re looking for a new project lead as our existing project lead is stepping back due to other commitments - however, we’ll commit to training you up and help you transition into the role at your own pace.

DBS Check: All Fences & Frontiers volunteers must obtain a DBS check to ensure the safety and well-being of our participants.

Why Join Us?

  • Make a meaningful impact on the lives of refugees and asylum seekers

  • Develop project management and leadership skills

  • Be part of a supportive, values-driven team

  • Gradual onboarding with training and support from the current project lead

Apply now to become part of our team and help create memorable experiences for refugee and asylum-seekers in London.

Please write to lewis.garland@fencesandfrontiers.org explaining why you’re passionate about the role and what you think you could bring to it. If you fit the criteria, we will be in touch soon to discuss the role further.

Volunteer for Never Walk Alone

Never Walk Alone is a walking group for adult refugees and asylum seekers. We  provide opportunities for our participants to visit areas of natural beauty and cultural importance, build friendships and a sense of community, practice English and improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

About the role: As a volunteer, your role will be to help ensure our trips are fun, safe and run smoothly.

You'll start by supporting our walks and gradually take on more responsibilities, including planning and leading walks.

Your tasks will include:

  • Organising and running walks: Working with the  Never Walk Alone project manager to plan walk routes, carry out risk assessments, liaise with external walk leads, collect and distribute food/refreshments.

  • Building positive relationships with our participants: encouraging them to engage with our creative and physical activities, build friendships, practice language skills etc.

This role is perfect for:

  • A person who has a passion for walking and nature, and believes in the therapeutic benefits of “walking and talking”.

  • A person committed to helping refugees and asylum seekers to integrate into the UK, providing them with enriching cultural experiences and a sense of community.

 Commitment and requirements:

  • Most trips take place on Saturdays, and we ask for a minimum commitment of one trip per month. We are looking for long-term volunteers (people who can commit for over a year)  because it is crucial that our participants are able to build trusting relationships with our volunteers.

  • DBS Check: All volunteers must obtain a DBS check to ensure the safety and well-being of the families we support.

Apply now to become part of our team and help create memorable experiences for refugee and asylum-seekers in London.
